WELCOME TO MY STERN LOADING VESSEL PAGE.
The SLV idea was brought to my attention by my friend Andrew Bell of Porthleven Cornwall. Andrew has a lifetime of experience of ships and shipping, particularly to
Look at my description of how the SLV would work on the Isles of Scilly route.
Look at a presentation by Southern Shipping of the SLV design.
This type of vessel allows rapid loading from a simple slipway and greatly reduces the handling and dock labour costs inherent in a conventional lift on lift off cargo service. A very efficient service of this type serves Flinder's Island in the Bass Straight. A simlar population to the Isles of Scilly and in similar sea conditions. Up to 24 passengers and 300 Tonnes of freight and vehicles are carried.
At St Mary’s a slipway could be built away form the quay and coupled with a distribution depot on the industrial estate would take nearly all the daily freight traffic away from the quay and the town. The vessel could also deliver freight directly to the off islands, thus avoiding the costly double handling required at present.
